Introducing Inquiry into Primary and Intermediate Research

What Does The Book Make You Think About?
This workshop will demonstrate how student inquiry can be incorporated into both primary and intermediate student research. Participants will have the opportunity to bring an existing research project and transform it into a student focused learning experience using inquiry to define purpose, generate questions, examine information resources, and ultimately demonstrate learning by creating a meaningful research project. Participants will also develop strategies to incorporate higher-level thinking skills into their research project. The workshop will examine how technology can be used to enhance and support the inquiry process.

Presenters: Amy Deitz and Pam Held
Target Audience: K-5

This workshop examines teaching methods that attempt to connect required class texts with database readings. The project based activities discussed give students experience in sustained reading of online sources and provide opportunities for choice. During the workshop, these techniques will be demonstrated by modeling a lesson on Of Mice and Men. In the example, students examine what the book makes them think about and how these ideas and reactions relate to non-fiction articles available through databases such as CQ Researcher and SIRS. The students then take these lessons and use them to develop a critical thinking paper.

Presenter: Jodi Danaher
